I started 2013 full of enthusiasm to get a few wedding bookings to build on the momentum of photographing Denis & Mena's and Susan & Fraser's weddings late the previous year. So plans were made and goals were set... and then ignored!!!
Instead early in the 2013 my photography journey (no pun intended) went off on a whole new direction and so any thoughts of wedding bookings were set aside as travel photography came to the fore through my link up with Essential Hotels. What could be said to be the ultimate combination of work and play saw us, as a family, enjoy stays in Dublin, Belfast, Galway, Cork, Killarney, Cavan and Adare. visiting Dublin Zoo, Kylemore Abbey, Blarney Castle and the Cliffs of Moher, to name a few; and also discovering a few less well know gems, such as Giddy Studios & Brigit's Garden.
The CIty of Culture's big occasions also provided a constant simply of great photographic opportunities and with the joys of social media I was able to share them far and wide - it was great be able to almost instantly share the exciting experiences in the City, and amazing to get feedback from across the world , including the USA, Australia & South Africa (thanks Kate!).
I was also privileged enough to be asked to do a number of family photography sessions throughout the year; studio shoots, early mornings in the city centre, a 50th Wedding Anniversary, fun in the Playtrail, christening celebrations in beach side holiday homes, and the more traditional setting of grandparents houses for First Communion parties, all provided individual challenges and were all lots of fun - nothing quite beats the job satisfaction of making family photos that are cherished enough to be hung on the wall by doting parents.
I can't not mention my new niche of cake photography - being approached by an up and coming bespoke cake and cupcake maker www.PrettyElegantCakes.com to photograph their creations can only be considered a compliment - the fact my wife is the woman behind the creations is surely only a co-incidence!
So for 2014 I think I'll adopt a more que sera attitude - although with four weddings already on the books, and commissions from Essential Hotels continuing it looks like I'll be kept busy...
I am a wedding & family photographer based in Derry in the North West of Ireland.
