Relaxed Family Photography
Hi, welcome to my interpretation of 'family photography' with a few of my favourite photos from Family Sessions taken over the past few years...
My Approach To Family Photography
Like a lot of photographers it was my having my own kids that gave me the impetus to get into 'proper' photography; the gateway into seeing photography as so much more than the traditional snapshot... after the birth of my first I soon abandoned a wee point & shoot camera to replace it something that gave more control & allowed me to add a bit of artistry to my photography while documenting everyday life...
Continued...
From the very start I was just drawn to photographing what might to some seem like the mundane side of life - just photographing the kids being themselves, being able to capture a memory without needing to take them out of their own moment to stop for my photograph... over time I became more aware of the whole documentary side of family photograph & that a white studio background or formally posed shots were far from the only options... Fifteen years of fatherhood, and tens of thousands of photos later it's still the captured little moment that mean the world to me (Family Photography Now published by Thames & Hudson is a great starting point if you're a keen photographer yourself...)
I really feel for good family photography simplicity is the best approach - I can come to your home, where everyone is comfortable, or we'll head to somewhere with a bit of meaning that the kids enjoy & capture you as you are, and the day as it happens - with the odd stop for a more intentional photo.
I'm very much lead by the kids - it's all about them - if that means needing to give them a wee bit of extra time, space & patience to let them get used to my presence before I even take out a camera then that's what we do... in a previous day job I worked with school kids on a daily basis, and am quite happy to hear them telling me about their favourite Youtubers, or Superheros throughout any sessions...
The bottom line is I'm a parent too - so I know, as well as you do, that the more precise the plans and ideas of exactly what you want the less likely it is that things will turn out that way!! So we can get together for a couple of hours, I'll bring a camera and simply capture you all as you really are...

First Communion Photography
I find First Communion Photography to be family photography with a difference - one of my big loves of family photography is just letting the kids be kids - that approach doesn't necessarily work when you're wearing a fancy white dress, or a well fitted suit that's somewhat different from your normal get-up! You also might be on a tighter than usual schedule with a dinner booking, or house party to get to...
So things do need to be a bit more formal, and organised - only a bit mind, there's still no need for it to be stuffy, or straight-laced... ideally on a Communion shot we'll head somewhere that has a bit of meaning for the family & we'll just go for a walk - with the odd stop for a photo along the way... click the photo below for a look at some previous shoots...
