In 2023 I had the absolute privilege of, again, being asked document the Learning to Fly Wedding Photographers retreat in Culdaff, Donegal. Originally a local gathering, the now annual event has organically evolved into one that has attracted amazing photographers from Ireland, the UK, Europe, and Canada to Culdaff - all under the curation of the events founder Jay Doherty. It was a massive confidence boost when Jay first asked me to be the official photographer at the 2021 event - being the designated photographer in a room absolutely brimming with wedding photography talent was an interesting dynamic and definitely a challenge! Being invited back to cover the 2023 event give me reassurance that it was a challenge I was able to rise to. The icing on the cake was seeing some of the comments on my photographs from photographers I admired - seriously it'd be the photographic equilavent of a Paul Hollywood handshake. Here are a few of my images from October 2023's Learning to Fly, and to be somewhat self indulgent I've included some of the compliments I've received - I'd like to think photographing while listening to Two Mann Studio, Annie Keffache, Peter Carvill and Rich Gilligan share their wisdom has inspired my to 'raise my game' once again. Photos are first class sir,, start to finish, they do you and Learning to fly very proud Jay Doherty Photography These are unbelievable Patrick... you are an absolute master of capturing moments & emotions Caroline Smyth Photography & Wedding Celebrant Just brilliant - what incredible memories you have captured for so many people. Dami, an up-and-coming local afro-beats artist, got in touch a few months ago needing some images to use on his social media & album cover art for his music career @hollabarsmusic
So we headed into Derry City Centre, with a camera, an open mind, and an hour so so til the sun went down to experiment & see what we could come up... These are a few of my personal favourites from the session... Emer had a big birthday & having recently returned to Donegal from LA it seemed the perfect opportunity to get all her friends together to celebrate in style....
I was delighted to be asked to come along & document the evening's craic as a joint birthday gift from a few of Emer's closest friends... The evening wasn't all smiles though - as there was a bit of heartache to document earlier in the evening as the party-goers watched Ireland lose to New Zealand's match in the Rugby World Cup... Here's a wee look at the evening... |
